Creating Your Vocational Credo
Who do you care about the most? These are likely the people who will motivate you to heal the world. For me, they are voiceless people, which actually turn out to be mostly women and children, but also those who arenât in touch with their God-given purpose. And this usually includes more men than women. I resonate with these people because I once stood in their shoes. I know how it feels. These are the people that matter most to me. My heart bursts for them.
A good vocational credo responds to these questions: What would it look like if Jesus came into the midst of those I care about the most? How would Jesusâ presence effect them? How would I act toward them if I were a representative of Jesus? The last question should help you find your action verb. Your action verb is directive. Here are a few examples of action verbs: help, create, provide, facilitate, curate. Check the list of vocations in appendix two for examples of these verbs.
Now it is your turn to write a vocational credo. Consider your first pain or wound, your favorite quote and book, and how you would heal the world. Your favorite quote and your favorite book highlight your values. Your first pain is the event or state of being that you eventually come to push back against. And your world-healing dream is connected to the people you care about the most, those your heart bursts for. All three are connected in the redemption of your pain and the expression of your values.
